Big Birthday celebrations for the Big Issue
The Big Issue is Australia’s leading social enterprise. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that develops solutions to help homeless, disadvantaged and marginalised people positively change their lives. The Big Issue magazine is published fortnightly and sold on the streets by vendors who purchase copies for $3.50 and sell them for $7, keeping the difference.
The Big Issue celebrated its 21st birthday last month. Since the magazine first launched in Melbourne in 1996, about 6500 people have worked as vendors across Australia. Vendors have sold 11 million copies of The Big Issue and earned more than $25 million.
The organisation has developed a range of additional programs and enterprises alongside The Big Issue street magazine. These include the Women’s Subscription Enterprise, The Big Issue Classroom and the Community Street Soccer Program.
The Big Issue NSW & ACT operations manager Chris Campbell said he was grateful for the community’s support. “I’d like to thank the local community for supporting the men and women who sell The Big Issue and participate in our other programs. We look forward to continuing our work helping people help themselves.”
